      Decoding dress code

Campus fashionistas Nilofer D’Souza , Sneha Menon and Karishma Nair give you the lowdown on how you can stay stylish without breaking the rules …

      Aug 12, 2008, 06:37 IST

It’s the season of sales. Every one of those oh-so-gorgeous brands you’ve longed for is up for grabs at slashed rates. But what’s the point? With dress codes firmly in place in most colleges in Bangalore, there’s little that college-goers can splurge on. The ‘No-T-shirts-and-no-sleeveless-outfits ‘ rule spelt doom for most college students who believed they could wear their attitude. Today, students have learnt to work around the rules and still express themselves while staying in vogue. Here’s how they spice up their restricted wardrobe and add that extra zing to it.
      Tunics and leggings

The current trends across the fashion industry like tunics and leggings have helped the students express themselves even as they stay covered and abide by the college rules. Although T-shirts are banned, tunics, which are made from a similar material, are considered to be okay since they have sleeves and are as long as a short kurti. These tunics or kurtis can be teamed up with a pair of leggings (also known as tights) to create a chic ensemble.

      The ethnic look

In some colleges, like Christ College, for instance, only salwar kameezes are allowed for girls. “Salwar kameez? Oh my God! I will look like my mom!” – this would be the typical reaction of any fashion conscious girl. But students have fashioned a chic ethnic look for themselves. Kurtas with puffed sleeves paired with patiala pants or tight churidhars , grunge kolhapuri chappals , mix-and-match accessories , and dark eye make-up is our very own Indian style statement. “I find myself wearing all those salwars which I used to wear only

when there was a family function,” says Jalaja Ramanunni , a mass communication student from Commits. “What I love is that I can mix and match accessories and make a salwar look just as cool as any other outfit,” she adds. At Christ College, the girls wear stylish collars, patialas and elegant kurtis with matching ballet shoes, mojouries and flip-flops to boot.

      Filmi fashions

Post Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, the colourful hair clips that actress Genelia D’Souza sports in the film have become a rage among girls. Who can forget the trend that Kareena Kapoor set with the long tops and harem pants in Jab We Met, which we at college often try to pass off as a dress code! Oversized bags, Osho chappals, colourful stoles, funky belts over kurtas , and loud accessories seem to be the flavour of the season among the fashion conscious. Even the more conservative wear printed salwar bottoms and duppattas to match a plain kurta. Boring salwar suits have been shown the door. Finally!

      Streaks of colour

At Mount Carmel College, the girls hold their head high. There are people with streaked hair in colours like shocking pink and cool blue but that doesn’t make them look bad. They sport these with trendy ensembles ranging from designer brands and Comm Street fashions.

      FASHION DECREE

Here’s a look at the dress codes in some of the city’s colleges

      Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College:

      For boys:

formal pants and shirts; t-shirts (no slogans) with jeans (not torn); no baggy pants and no low-waist jeans.

      For girls:

Salwars and kurtis with jeans. No sleeveless or body hugging tops.

      Teachers:

Saree for women and formal pants and shirts for men.

      National College, Basavanagudi

Do not have any rigid dress code as such. However, the college authorities said that the students have to wear ‘decent’ clothes.

      National College, Jayanagar

No strict dress code here too except for a few rules.

      Girls:

No revealing or body hugging dress

      Boys:

jeans, formal pants allowed. They can flaunt long hair provided they tie it.

Piercing: Not allowed for men Tatoos:

      Not allowed.

      NMKRV College for Women, Jayanagar

No strict dress code. But girls are prohibited from wearing, again, indecent or provocative clothes. College authorities said that teachers and seniors take the initiative in educating students about the kind of clothes to be worn in the college.

      Christ University

      Dress Code:

Depends from course to course. Students are advised to wear formals. Casuals only on weekends. It’s kurtis and jeans for girls and formal pant/shirt for boys. No sleeveless / body hugging tees allowed. It’s mandatory for management students to wear suits. Neck ties for boys is a must. Suits can be accompanied with blazers, if weather permits. Other vocational courses too have uniforms. It is mandated that students in vocational courses wear uniforms during college fests and other important functions.

      Facial hair:

      Clean, well-kept beard/ moustache allowed. Goatees, a strict no-no .

      Earrings:

      Not allowed for guys.

      Teachers:

It’s sarees for women, formal pant and shirt for men.

      Commits, Bangalore

      Dress Code:

Students are asked to dress appropriately to class.

      Hair:

As long as it’s clean and well-kept, any length will do. Ditto for facial hair too.

      Jyoti Nivas College

      Dress Code:

Students should be dressed modestly. Salwar suits, jeans with long tops (no sleeveless) is preferred.

      Hairdo:

Long hours at college hardly leaves time for students to experiment with different hairstyles. The same goes with body piercing and tattoos. However, the girls are allowed to sport nonpermanent tattoos or mehndi

      Teachers:

Sarees for ladies; formal pants/ shirt for men.

      St Joseph’s College

      Dress code:

Students are expected to be decently dressed. No directive on hairdos, earrings, body piercing and tattoos as well.

This institution thinks of itself as a Corrupt leader in the South Indian Education politics. It has paid all the Ranking Publishers to rate itself as the best college when there are other colleges in the country where better education is available. I left the university after a year because of inability to find time for other courses/extra-curricular activities. If one wants to enjoy their life for the next 3 years solely, then Christ is the place to be but If someone wants to pursue other things in life such as a CA, you should forget about BCom Honours. Most of the teachers are decent but some will make you kill yourself. Placements are okayish considering the amount of money you’d be spending on the college over the next 3 years.

Being a Christite was always my dream after Sri Ram college of commerce for B.com ( honours ) . Life isn’t easy nowadays as there is too much competition for getting into the best college of India for your course of choice . I think getting into Christ was one of the biggest thing which happened to my life . Christ life never seems to be easy in the beginning .I always found that life in Christ is tough and I may not be able to cope up with the Christ environment. Christ is one of the top 5 University for b.com(h) . It ranks 4 among other institutions . The life of Christite is very enriching , practical and joyful . The exposure which Christ gives is comparetively much better than other colleges . We have good faculty who are always trying to find new or alternative method of teaching . From PPT to showing live case studies video , everything happens in christ . The teachers are also cooperative except some few , you may not find everyone good ( after all you are a student ) and caring always . But after completing my 1st year b.com(h) in christ I am very happy and blessed to be a part of such a institution. Talking about campus the campus is very clean and tidy . The Christites are well behaved students and they all know how to maintain the greenary and beauty of the campus . The college is well appreciated for it’s greenary . There is beauty all around the college , it makes so beautiful and lovely the environment to study . Talking about the placement , I have heard that the placement cell of the college is good . The student scoring above 70% are eligible to sit in the placement . Talking about the honours paper , we have Banking & Insurance as one honours paper and Finance & Investment as another . In the 3rd year the student will be opting either of these paper . Basically the demand for the latter is much more and those students woh score 75%+ get first chance to choose their honours paper . Also , there is lot of fests which happens in commerce department , inside the college as well as outside the college . So , I think this gives a good exposure to outside world . Also , the admission in b.com(H) is completely based on admission test and interview . The infrastructure of christ is also good . A college established in the middle of the city and it still has good infrastructure and space for students . There is several inter class tournaments happening in the college which will give you a chance to show your talent . We have sports day conducted every year in the month of December . But still I think the college needs to improve in sports . Also , 85% attendance is mandatory for everyone otherwise there is some amount of fine charged from students . In some cases 75% attendance is considered on certain grounds . Also the dress code for boys is completely formal dress while for girls it is salwar kameez with dupatta . I hope , all what I have said must have cleared your doubts regarding one of the prestigious institution of the country . My opinions are based completely on what I have noticed in christ and what I have observed during my 1 year of life in Christ University .

I study in Christ University Management Department as an undergraduate student. As per India Today Survey Christ University is ranked no. 1 for its BBA courses. BBA courses are of varied types in Christ i.e. BBA, BBA Honours, BBA Finance and international business and BBA finance and accounts.
I’ll be talking about the college by making a few divisions.
      1. INFRASTRUCTURE
Christ is blessed with a solid infrastructure. It has an auditorium capacity of upto 1000 students and latest soundproof, surround sound and the best lighting facility available. Annual General Meetings of various companies are held here.
Apart from auditorium we have around 12 Basket ball courts, 10 tennis courts, hockey field, cricket fileds and gyms. We have a separate sport complex for players. The only negative point is that there is no swimming pool.
The classrooms and spacious and equipped with projectors and audio system. Most of the bba classroom are gallery like. The seats are well furnished and the walls are well maintained.
Every block has its own canteen and kiosk. Each of the canteen’s menu is different to that of the rest. We have Indian Coffee House, Aman Rasoi, Forking Rolls, Freshetaria, Nandini, Gourmet etc. the food variety is endless and the prices are affordable for everyday lunch inside the campus.
Other facilities on campus includes photocopy shops, stationery shops, Souvenior Shops, Prayer rooms, Elevators, knowledge centre library that is 4 floor and Library block that is of 2 floors etc
      2. COLLEGE LIFE:-
Christ offers best of both worlds. The internal assessments are rigorous and continuous. Assignments are meant to be plagiarism free. The year starts with CIA-1 and Vistas that is the management fest which includes categories like Best Manager, Corporate Strategy, HR, Marketing, Finance etc which give task based on real time scenarios of corporate world. The comes in Aalap which is a cultural fest which includes all forms of art and dance and debates. Then comes up Thrive which is similar to vistas but it is only limited to first year students. The is how Christ keeps up the balance between academics and co-curricular activities.
      3. PLACEMENTS:-
The placements will begin around your 5th semester and will continue till the end of your 6th semester. You can choose what companies you wish to sit for based on 2 factors.
      1. Your aggregate %
      2. Your specialization in the final year.
I would suggest you keep your aggregate % around 60 – 70% and you shall see yourself remaining eligible for most of the companies. Ofc, in addition to this you will also have to clear their aptitude tests and interviews. The university takes pride in its placements and more or less 100% of the students get placed through campus. However, if you don’t, don’t get discouraged, remain in contact with your seniors and they can recommend you in the organizations they’re already working for. The main thing is to make sure you have decent marks. Your placements will range from startups to established MNC’s. I can take some names, Deloitte, KPMG, AON, Xchanging, Futures First, Facebook, L&T, TCS, Zomato, Thomson&Reuters, Societies Generale all of which are industry leaders in their respective segments.
Also, keep in mind that there is no such thing as BBA placements specifically. If a company comes to campus, you’re most likely going to face stiff competition So you’ll have to fight your way through. But don’t worry, you’ll make it.
      4. HOSTELS
Christ has both in campus and outside campus hostels. Hostels for undergrad Girls is Jonas hall which is inside campus whereas hostel for Post grad boys is St. Elias Hostel. Both the hostels have spacious rooms and in house wardens. Christ hostels have a very strict curfew and night out system which makes life of an on campus student pretty difficult. They have no mess system. You have to purchase your own food every day. Dress code is one major issue in the hostel. Also, undergraduate boys hostel is right behind Christ university.
      5. CARRER GROWTH:-
Christ prepares a student for all the challenges they might face in the future. Christ gives enough industrial exposure in the form of social responsibility projects, internship project and Industrial visits every semester. The dress code and grooming conditions might seem harsh for an undergraduate level but all this shapes up the personality of the student in long run.
      6. Why I chose Christ University?
Christ is one of the oldest institituion in the heart of Bangalore. I chose it because it was the no. 1 institute offering the course I wanted to pursue. Also, my seniors recommended this college because of the all round development and improvement in CV which happens here.
      7. FACULTY
Christ Management Department have a base of around 40 faculty members headed by Jain Mathew sir. The faculty member is well qualified with PHDs and M Phils. Method of teaching for all the faculty members are different. Some use lecture system, some use PPTs, some case study method etc. faculty members are open to discussion and suggestions. Anyhow some teachers have their own loopholes an are stringent not to work on them which a negative point.
