So what’s it like? What facilities/machines does it have? Does it have a pool? And what’s the changing rooms/showers like?

The gym in itself is well equipped and on the North Campus. However the pool is on the South campus.

It’s good. A load of different weights machines, a dozen treadmills or so, few rowing machines, bikes, cross trainers, a whole load of other weight training stuff.

Changing rooms are fine. Lockers cost €10 (this is for a wrist band); you’re not meant to leave bags in the changing rooms/gym itself.

If you go please remember to wipe down any machines you use and don’t hog machines / sit on them while doing nothing, that drives me mad.

The swimming pool is tiny, can remember doing kayak training there and to say it was a tight squeeze was an understatement.

So is the tenner a deposit or do you just keep the locker?

Well I assumed that was a given

I think you just keep it.

The gym is grand, can get busy at certain times but anytime I’ve been it’s never been too packed out.

You can easily go for a swim after the gym, it’s only about a 5 min walk away (or a 2 min jog).

The tenner is used to purchase a wristband, with which you can use one of the bank of lockers for free. As far as I recall, you can leave stuff in there for up to 2 hours, after which the locker locks shut until about 10pm, when they all open automatically, to prevent people leaving stuff in there all day and using it as a locker for college stuff, as it were.

Ok so I’m thinking a health kick to start the year is in order.. way too lazy over the last summer!

Would anyone be able to give me like the best times in the day to try the gym, where it wouldn’t be too busy (i.e. no much wait for machines) or does it get busy?

We all start the year like that, good luck stickin’ to your health plan.

Apparently the gym is busiest around lunchtime (1-3pm) but I’ve never seen it rammed. I usually went around 7pm and it was grand.

Early when it opens in the morning.

The gym will be full of people with the same mind set as you initially, then people will drop off.

Just wondering if there are people in the gym who don’t mind giving a new person a hand? I have never been bothered with paying for a gym that I may only use twice a year, but with it being free, I might try it out.

Problem is I honestly wouldn’t know where to start. Would the gym staff help you out with that?
